THE aliens are out there and Earth had better watch out, at least according to Stephen Hawking. He has suggested that extraterrestrials are almost certain to exist — but that instead of seeking them out, humanity should be doing all it that can to avoid any contact.
스티븐호킹에 따르면 “외계인은 존재하며 인류는 경각심을 가져야 할 것이다”라고 한다. 스티븐 호킹은 외계인의 존재여부가 거의 확실하다고 제안하면서 인류는 그들을 찾아 다닐 것이 아니라 접촉을 피해야 할 것이라고 경고했다.

The suggestions come in a new documentary series in which Hawking, one of the world’s leading scientists, will set out his latest thinking on some of the universe’s greatest mysteries.
이번에 새로 방영될 다큐멘터리에는 세계적 과학자들이 등장하게 되는데 호킹은 그 중에 한사람으로서 그 동안 인류에게 가장 큰 미스테리인 우주에 대한 최첨단의 사고방식을 제시하게 된다.

Alien life, he will suggest, is almost certain to exist in many other parts of the universe: not just in planets, but perhaps in the centre of stars or even floating in interplanetary space.
이번 다큐에서 그는 그저 하나만의 행성이 아니라 우주 곳곳에 외계 생명체가 존재한다는 것이 거의 확실하다고 제안한다. 행성뿐만이 아니라 어쩌면 별들의 중심지점 또는 행성계들 사이의 우주공간을 떠다니면서 살고 있을지도 모른다고 한다.

Hawking’s logic on aliens is, for him, unusually simple. The universe, he points out, has 100 billion galaxies, each containing hundreds of millions of stars. In such a big place, Earth is unlikely to be the only planet where life has evolved.
외계인에 관련한 호킹의 논리는 유난히 간단하다. 우주에는 100 빌리언의 은하계가 존재하며 각 은하계에는 수억개의 별들이 있다고 지적한다. 그렇게 많은 곳에서 지구만이 유일하게 생명체가 진화했다고 볼 수는 없다는 것이다.

“To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational,” he said. “The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.”
“나의 수학적인 머리로 생각했을 때 외계인의 존재를 수학만으로도 인정할 수 잇는데 그러한 인정은 완벽하게 합리적인 것이다. 하지만 우리에게 직면된 가장 큰 도전은 외계인들이 과연 어떤 것이냐는 것이다”라고 호킹은 말했다.

The answer, he suggests, is that most of it will be the equivalent of microbes or simple animals — the sort of life that has dominated Earth for most of its history.
그가 답으로 제시한 것은 외계인들은 미생물이 아니면 그저 동물의 일종과 같을 수 있다는 것이다. 흡사 우리 지구의 역사에서 늘 존재해 왔던 그런 것들과 같다는 말이다.

One scene in his documentary for the Discovery Channel shows herds of two-legged herbivores browsing on an alien cliff-face where they are picked off by flying, yellow lizard-like predators. Another shows glowing fluorescent aquatic animals forming vast shoals in the oceans thought to underlie the thick ice coating Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter.
디스커버리 채널에서 방영될 그의 다큐멘터리에 나오는 장면중에는 다리 두개가 달린 초식동물들의 무리가 평평한 얼굴 모양의 외계인들을 둘러 보는데 외계인들은 노랑빛깔을 지닌 도마뱀 모양을 가진 육식동물 사냥꾼들에 의해 낚아 채어 지는 장면이 나온다. 또 다른 에피소드에서는 야광의 빛을 발하는 수중동물들이 방대한 무리를 지어 쥬피터의 달인 유로파의 얼음 바다 밑을 돌아다니는 장면도 볼 수 있다.

Such scenes are speculative, but Hawking uses them to lead on to a serious point: that a few life forms could be intelligent and pose a threat. Hawking believes that contact with such a species could be devastating for humanity.
물론 그런 장면들은 이론에 불과하겠지만 호킹은 그런 생명체들 중 지적인 것들이 존재할 수 있으며 우리 인류에게는 위협이 될 수 있다는 스토리로 발전시킨다. 호킹은 그런 것들과 직접적으로 닿게 되면 인류에게 파괴적인 결과를 가져다 줄 있다고 믿고 있다.

He suggests that aliens might simply raid Earth for its resources and then move on: “We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.”

He concludes that trying to make contact with alien races is “a little too risky”. He said: “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”
호킹은 그런 앨리언들과 접촉하는 것은 위험이 따를 것으로 결론 짓는다. “만약 앨리언들이 지구에 온다는 것은 크리스토퍼 콜럼부스가 미국 대륙에 첫 발을 딛는 것과 같을 것이다. 그것은 미국 토속민 (인디언)들에게는 그리 좋은 결과를 가져다 주지 못했던 것과 같다”고 말했다.

The completion of the documentary marks a triumph for Hawking, now 68, who is paralysed by motor neurone disease and has very limited powers of communication. The project took him and his producers three years, during which he insisted on rewriting large chunks of the script and checking the filming.

John Smithson, executive producer for Discovery, said: “He wanted to make a programme that was entertaining for a general audience as well as scientific and that’s a tough job, given the complexity of the ideas involved.”

Hawking has suggested the possibility of alien life before but his views have been clarified by a series of scientific breakthroughs, such as the discovery, since 1995, of more than 450 planets orbiting distant stars, showing that planets are a common phenomenon.
호킹은 예전에도 애일리언이 존재할 수 있다는 가능성을 제안해 왔는데 1995년부터 스타들 주변을 돌고 있는 450개 행성들의 발견으로 인해 행성의 존재가 이미 상식적인 현상으로 간주되기 시작하면서 그와같은 주장들이 명확해지기 시작했다.

So far, all the new planets found have been far larger than Earth, but only because the telescopes used to detect them are not sensitive enough to detect Earth-sized bodies at such distances.
지금까지 발견된 새로운 행성들은 모두가 지구보다 훨씬 큰 싸이즈였는데 그것은 과학자들이 사용할 수 있는 천체 망원경들이 그런 것들보다 작은 것들을 찾아낼 수 있는 능력이 모자라기 때문일 뿐이었다.

Another breakthrough is the discovery that life on Earth has proven able to colonise its most extreme environments. If life can survive and evolve there, scientists reason, then perhaps nowhere is out of bounds.
또 하나의 도약은 지구의 생명체들이 최악의 환경마저도 지배할 수 있는 능력을 증명했다는 사실이다. 그러한 저력이라면 우주 어느 곳에서도 생존할 수 있는 가능성이 내재한다는 것이다.

Hawking’s belief in aliens places him in good scientific company. In his recent Wonders of the Solar System BBC series, Professor Brian Cox backed the idea, too, suggesting Mars, Europa and Titan, a moon of Saturn, as likely places to look.
호킹의 그러한 믿음은 혼자만의 것은 아니다. 그가 출연한 BBC 다큐멘터리 시리즈였던 ‘태양계의 불가사의’에서 브라이언 칵스 교수는 호킹이 제안한데로 새턴 (토성)의 궤도를 공전하는 유로파와 타이탄이 인류가 살 수 있는 행성이 될 수도 있다고 주장했다.

Similarly, Lord Rees, the astronomer royal, warned in a lecture earlier this year that aliens might prove to be beyond human understanding.
천체학자인 뤼스공도 금년에 있었던 강의를 통해 애일리언들은 우리가 아직도 이해할 수 없는 존재라고 경고했다.

“I suspect there could be life and intelligence out there in forms we can’t conceive,” he said. “Just as a chimpanzee can’t understand quantum theory, it could be there are aspects of reality that are beyond the capacity of our brains.”
“침팬지들이 양자이론을 이해하지 못하듯이 우리 두뇌로는 이해하지 못하는 외계 생명체와 외계지식인이 존재할 수 있다”라고 그는 덧 붙였다.
