Here I Stand (이 자리에 서서)

There is a story of a young, but earnest Zen student who approached his teacher, and asked the Master, "If I work very hard and diligently, how long will it take for me to find Zen? The Master thought about this, then replied, "Ten years” The student then said, "But what if I work very, very hard and really apply myself to learn fast -- How long then?" Replied the Master, "Well, twenty years." "But, if I really, really work at it, how long then?" asked the student. "Thirty years," replied the Master. "But, I do not understand," said the disappointed student. "At each time that I say I will work harder, you say it will take me longer. Why do you say that?" Replied the Master, "When you have one eye on the goal, you only have one eye on the path."

착실한 선종의 학생 하나가 스승에게 다가가 물었다. “제가 최선을 다해서 수행을 했을때 ‘선’을 찾기까지는  얼마나 오래 걸리겠습니까?” 잠시 생각을 한 스승은 답했다. “10년?” 학생은 또 질문했다. “하지만 제가 진짜 열심히 해서 최대한대로 빨리 배운다면 – 얼마나?" 스승은 대답하기를 “흠,,,20년?” 실망한 학생은 반문했다. “이해가 안됩니다. 더 열심히 할수록 더 오래 걸린다고 대답하시니 말입니다. 왜 그렀게 말씀하십니까?” 선생은 대답했다. “너의 한쪽 시선이 목표에 촛점을 두고 있기 때문에 거기까지 가는 과정에 맞출 시선이 나머지 한쪽 눈 밖에 남아있지 않기 때문이란다.” 

This is the dilemma I've faced within the American education system. We are so focused on a goal, whether it be passing a test, or graduating as first in the class. However, in this way, we do not really learn. We do whatever it takes to achieve our original objective.

이것이 바로 미국에서 교육을 받아 온 저의 갈등입니다. 우리는 목표달성에 촛점을 맞춰 왔습니다. 그 목표가 시험점수를 잘 받는 것이거나 일등을 하는 것이죠. 그런식으로는 제대로 배울 수가 없습니다. 우린 목표를 달성하기 위해 혼신을 바칩니다. 

Some of you may be thinking, “Well, if you pass a test, or become valedictorian, didn't you learn something? Well, yes, you learned something, but not all that you could have. Perhaps, you only learned how to memorize names, places, and dates to later on forget in order to clear your mind for the next test. School is not all that it can be. Right now, it is a place for most people to determine that their goal is to get out as soon as possible.

여기에 앉아있는 교우들 중에 이렇게 생각하는 사람들이 있을 겁니다. “치이, 시험을 잘 보든지 아니면 수석졸업을 했다면 뭔가는 배운거 아닌가” 라고 말입니다. 물론 배웠습니다. 하지만 우리는 훨씬 더 많은 것을 배울 수 있었습니다. 우리는 이름이나 장소, 날짜등을 외우는 방법만을 배웠죠. 물론 다음 시험을 위해서 그렇게 외웠던 것들을 기억에서 지워 버리곤 합니다. 학교가 구실을 제대로 못하고 있습니다. 대부분의 학생들에게 있어서 학교는 이제 최대한 빨리 졸업하고 나가는 것이 목표인 곳이 되어 버렸습니다.

I am now accomplishing that goal. I am graduating. I should look at this as a positive experience, especially being at the top of my class. However, in retrospect, I cannot say that I am any more intelligent than my peers. I can attest that I am only the best at doing what I am told and working the system. Yet, here I stand, and I am supposed to be proud that I have completed this period of indoctrination.

나는 그 목표를 달성했습니다. 졸업을 하고 있잖습니까? 아주 잘 한 일이겠지요. 게다가 수석 졸업생으로 뽑혔으니까 말입니다. 그렇다고 내가 교우들 보다 지적으로 우월하다고 말 할 수 없습니다. 내가 말할 수 있는 것은 나는 교육 시스템이 시키는 데로 잘 따랐을 뿐이라는 겁니다. 그런데 난 지금 이자리에 서서 그동안 세뇌를 무척 잘 받아 왔다는걸 자랑스럽게 생각해야 합니다. 

I will leave in the fall to go on to the next phase expected of me, in order to receive a paper document that certifies that I am capable of work. But I contest that I am a human being, a thinker, an adventurer – not a worker. A worker is someone who is trapped within repetition – a slave of the system set up before him.

다음 단계로 나는 이제 사회에 나가 일을 할 수 있다는 증명서를 받아내기 위해 대학교로 향하게 됩니다. 하지만 나는 단지 일꾼이 되기 위해 사는 것이 아니라 사색과 모험을 즐기는 인간이 되기 위해 살고 싶습니다. 일꾼은 반복되는 일상에 갇혀 사는 사람입니다 – 이 사회 제도가 만들어 낸 노예인 것이죠. 

But now, I have successfully shown that I was the best slave. I did what I was told to the extreme. While others sat in class and doodled to later become great artists, I sat in class to take notes and become a great test-taker. While others would come to class without their homework done because they were reading about an interest of theirs, I never missed an assignment. While others were creating music and writing lyrics, I decided to do extra credit, even though I never needed it.

나는 우리학교에서 가장 훌륭한 노예였다는 것을 증명하는데 성공했습니다. 시키는 것들을 엄청나게 잘 해냈습니다. 남들은 교실에 앉아서  가장 훌륭한 예술인이 될 것을 공상하며 낙서하고 있을 때 나는 시험을 잘 보기 위해 선생님의 강의를 받아쓰고 있었습니다. 남들은 좋아하는 책을 읽느라 숙제를 못해 왔을때 나는 숙제를 빠짐없이 제출했습니다. 남들이 작곡하고 가사를 써가고 있을 때 나는 필요도 없는 엑스트라 크레딧 숙제를 해 갔습니다. 

So, I wonder, why did I even want this position? Sure, I earned it, but what will come of it? When I leave educational institutionalism, will I be successful or forever lost? I have no clue about what I want to do with my life; I have no interests because I saw every subject of study as work, and I excelled at every subject just for the purpose of excelling, not learning. And quite frankly, now I'm scared.

내가 이자리를 왜 원했는지도 모르겠습니다. 물론 내 노력의 댓가이겠지요. 하지만 뭐가 생기는 겁니까? 교육이라는 이 제도를 벗어나게 된다면 나는 성공을 하게 될까요 아니면 길을 잃게 될까요? 나는 내 인생에서 무엇을 원하는지 전혀 모르고 있습니다. 내가 특별히 원하는 게 무엇인지도 모릅니다. 왜냐면 나는 그동안 모든 과목을 하나의 업무로 생각해 왔었기 때문입니다. 나는 모든 과목을 잘 해냈습니다. 배워야 했다기 보다 잘 해야했기 때문입니다. 솔직히 나는 지금 겁이 납니다. 

John Taylor Gatto, a retired school teacher and activist critical of compulsory schooling, asserts,  

“We could encourage the best qualities of youthfulness – curiosity, adventure, resilience, the capacity for surprising insight simply by being more flexible about time, texts, and tests, by introducing kids into truly competent adults, and by giving each student what autonomy he or she needs in order to take a risk every now and then. But we don't do that.” Between these cinderblock walls, we are all expected to be the same. We are trained to ace every standardized test, and those who deviate and see light through a different lens are worthless to the scheme of public education, and therefore viewed with contempt.

 교사로 정년퇴직한 이후 주입식 의무교육구조를 놓고 비평 운동가로 활동하는 잔 테일러 카토는 이렇게 주장합니다.

“우리는 젊은 마인드들의 호기심, 모험심, 폐기, 그리고 놀라운 통찰능력과 같은 최상의 퀄리티를 키워 낼 수 있는데 그 방법이 특별히 어려운 것은 아니다. 그저 시간과 교과서, 시험에 대해서 조금만 더 융통적이면 된다. 그리고 아이들에게 진정으로 능력있는 교사들을 붙여주고 아이들 자신들에게 처해 지는 위험을 직접 극복할 수 있도록 재량권을 지워주면 되는 것이다. 하지만 우리는 그렇게 하질 않는다. 아이들을 콘크리트 벽안에 가둬놓고 모두다 같은 사람으로 자라주길 원한다. 우리는 표준화된 시험에서 'A'를 받도록 훈련되어 왔으며 그 범위를 벗어나거나 다른 각도로 사물을 관찰하는 사람들은 공교육 체제를 모독하는 사람으로 비난 받아왔다.”

To illustrate this idea, doesn't it perturb you to learn about the idea of “critical thinking?” Is there really such a thing as “uncritically thinking?” To think is to process information in order to form an opinion. But if we are not critical when processing this information, are we really thinking? Or are we mindlessly accepting other opinions as truth?

그의 말이 무슨 뜻인지 설명해 보면, “비판적인 사고”라는 아이디어에 대해서 배운다는 그 자체가 황당하다고 생각하지 않습니까? 이 세상에 “비판적이지 않은 사고”라는 것이 있나요? 사고한다는 것은 의견을 조성하기 위해 정보를 처리하는 과정입니다. 그런데 우리가 정보를 처리하는 과정에서 비판적인 과정을 취하지 않는다면 우리는 정녕 생각(사고)하면서 살고 있는 것일까요? 아니면 우리는 그저 남들의 의견을 진실인양 받아들이고 마는 것일까요?

This was happening to me, and if it wasn't for the rare occurrence of an avant-garde tenth grade English teacher, Donna Bryan, who allowed me to open my mind and ask questions before accepting textbook doctrine, I would have been doomed. I am now enlightened, but my mind still feels disabled. I must retrain myself and constantly remember how insane this ostensibly sane place really is.

내가 10학년이었을 때 만났던 다나 브라이언 선생님이 아니었더라면 나도 그와 같은 사고방식에서 벗어나지 못했을 겁니다. 보기드문 전위적 (급진적) 아방가르드형의 그 선생님은 내 눈을 뜨게 해 주셨고 교과서가 주입하려는 내용을 받아들이기에 앞서 질문을 하도록 허락해 주셨습니다. 나는 이제 눈은 떳으나 아직도 불구처럼 느껴집니다. 나는 내 자신에게 표면상으로는 정상인 것처럼 보이는 이곳이 그렇지 않은 곳이라는 것을 끊임없이 되뇌이도록 훈련해야 했습니다.

And now here I am in a world guided by fear, a world suppressing the uniqueness that lies inside each of us, a world where we can either acquiesce to the inhuman nonsense of corporatism and materialism or insist on change. We are not enlivened by an educational system that clandestinely sets us up for jobs that could be automated, for work that need not be done, for enslavement without fervency for meaningful achievement. We have no choices in life when money is our motivational force. Our motivational force ought to be passion, but this is lost from the moment we step into a system that trains us, rather than inspires us.

나는 지금 공포의 가이드를 받고 있는 그리고 우리 안에 잠재해 있는 고유성을 억압하는 이세상에 서 있습니다. 우리는 기업주의와 물질만능주의의 잔인함을 묵과할 수도 있고 그것들을 변화하려고 고집할 수도 있습니다. 우리도 모르는 사이에 우리를 자동화된 일꾼으로 만들어가는 교육제도에 의해 우리가 생기를 얻고 있는 것이 아닙니다. 노동, 성취의 열정이 결여된 노예화를 위한 가치없는 직업교육인 것입니다. 하지만 우리에겐 선택의 여지가 없는 것 같습니다. 우리삶의 동력이 돈이기 때문입니다. 우리 삶의 동기는 열정이어야 합니다. 하지만 우리를 분발시키려 노력하는 대신 물질의 노예로 전락시키려는 이 교육 체제로 발을 들이는 순간 우리의 열정은 소멸되고 맙니다.

We are more than robotic bookshelves, conditioned to blurt out facts we were taught in school. We are all very special, every human on this planet is so special, so aren't we all deserving of something better, of using our minds for innovation, rather than memorization, for creativity, rather than futile activity, for rumination rather than stagnation? We are not here to get a degree, to then get a job, so we can consume industry-approved placation after placation. There is more, and more still.

우리는 학교에서 가르쳐 준 것들을 토해 낼 수있도록 만들어진 로보트 책장으로만 간주되서는 아닙니다. 우리 모두는 매우 특별합니다. 지구상의 모든 인간들은 매우 특별합니다. 그렇기 때문에 우리는 이보다 더 나은 대우를 받아야 마땅하다고 생각하지 않습니까? 혁신을 위해서 우리는 외워뒀던 것들 대신 우리의 마인드를 사용하고, 무의미한 활동을 위한 것이 아닌 창의력을 위해, 정체가 아닌 깊은 사고를 위해서 말입니다. 학위를 얻어내기 위해서, 직장을 잡기 위해서, 그래서 세속에 젖은 소비에 만족하기 위해서  여기에 서 있는 것이 아닙니다. 그 보다 더 의미 깊은 것들이 존재합니다.

The saddest part is that the majority of students don't have the opportunity to reflect as I did. The majority of students are put through the same brainwashing techniques in order to create a complacent labor force working in the interests of large corporations and secretive government, and worst of all, they are completely unaware of it.

가장 슬픈 현실은 대다수의 학생들이 나 처럼 돌아볼 기회를 가지지 못하고 있다는 사실입니다. 대다수의 학생들은 대기업들과 비밀 정부 세력들에게 쓰임 받을 자아 도취성 노동력의 배양을 위한 세뇌적 제도에 속해지게 되는데 더욱 안타까운 사실은 그 학생들은 자신들이 그와같은 배양 대상이 되고 있음을 전혀 모르고 있다는 겁니다.

I will never be able to turn back these 18 years. I can't run away to another country with an education system meant to enlighten rather than condition. This part of my life is over, and I want to make sure that no other child will have his or her potential suppressed by powers meant to exploit and control. We are human beings. We are thinkers, dreamers, explorers, artists, writers, engineers. We are anything we want to be - but only if we have an educational system that supports us rather than holds us down. A tree can grow, but only if its roots are given a healthy foundation.

나는 18년전으로 다시 돌아 갈 수 없습니다. 그렇다고 배양보다는 계발을 중시하는 나라로 도망갈 수도 없습니다. 지금까지의 내 인생은 끝이 났습니다. 하지만 나는 아이들이 착취와 배양의 세력에 자신의 포텐셜을 짖눌리게 되는 일이 없도록 하겠습니다. 우리는 인간입니다. 우리는 사색하는 사람들이고 꿈을 꾸는 사람들이며 모험가들이며 예술가들이고 작가들이며 공학도들입니다. 우리는 우리가 원하는 그 무엇이든 될 수 있는 사람들입니다. 우리를 짖누르는게 아니라 떠바쳐주는 교육제도가 전재할 때 그렇습니다. 나무는 건강한 뿌리가 받혀주고 있을 때 잘 자라날 수 있습니다.

For those of you out there that must continue to sit in desks and yield to the authoritarian ideologies of instructors, do not be disheartened. You still have the opportunity to stand up, ask questions, be critical, and create your own perspective. Demand a setting that will provide you with intellectual capabilities that allow you to expand your mind instead of directing it. Demand that you be interested in class. Demand that the excuse, “You have to learn this for the test” is not good enough for you. Education is an excellent tool, if used properly, but focus more on learning rather than getting good grades.

이곳에 권위주의적 관념에 사로잡힌 강사들에게 복종해야만 하는 사람들이 있다면 너무 낙심하지 마십시오. 여러분은 아직도 그들과 맞서 질문을 던질수도 있고, 비판적일 수 있으며 자신 고유의 관점을 만들어 갈 수도 있습니다. 지시 받을 것이 아니라 마인드를 확장시킬 수 있는 환경을 요구하십시오. 클라스에 관심을 가질 수 있도록 해 달라고 요구하십시오. 학교에서 시험을 목적으로 가르치는 것이 여러분에게는 충분하지 않다는 것을 요구하십시오. 교육은 제대로 쓰이면 훌륭한 도구가 됩니다. 높은 평점을 위해서가 아니라 배우는 것에 촛점을 맞추십시오.

For those of you that work within the system that I am condemning, I do not mean to insult; I intend to motivate. You have the power to change the incompetencies of this system. I know that you did not become a teacher or administrator to see your students bored. You cannot accept the authority of the governing bodies that tell you what to teach, how to teach it, and that you will be punished if you do not comply. Our potential is at stake.

여러분 중에 내가 비난하는 그런 교육 시스템 안에서 종사하고 있는 교육자들을 모욕하기 위해서 하는 말이 아니라는 것을 알아주셨으면 합니다. 여러분을 격려하고자 합니다. 여러분은 불완전한 이 제도를 고칠 수 있는 파워를 가지고 있습니다. 여러분은 학생들이 지루해 하는 모습을 보기 위해 교사가 된 것이 아닐 겁니다. 여러분은 당국에서 시키는데로만 가르쳐서는 안됩니다. 그들의 요구를 안들어주면 불이익을 당하게 하는 권위주의를 받아들여서는 안됩니다. 우리의 포텐셜이 달려있기 때문입니다.

For those of you that are now leaving this establishment, I say, do not forget what went on in these classrooms. Do not abandon those that come after you. We are the new future and we are not going to let tradition stand. We will break down the walls of corruption to let a garden of knowledge grow throughout America. Once educated properly, we will have the power to do anything, and best of all, we will only use that power for good, for we will be cultivated and wise. We will not accept anything at face value. We will ask questions, and we will demand truth.

이곳의 교육자분들 중에 정년퇴직을 하시는 분들께 당부하고 싶습니다. 우리 클라스룸에서 어떤 일들이 일어 났었는지 잊지 마십시오. 여러분들의 후배들을 내 버리지 마십시오. 우리는 새로운 미래이며 그와 같은 전통이 이어지는 것을 허락하지 않을 것입니다. 우리는 부패의 벽을 무너뜨리고 지식의 정원이 미국 전역에 자라나도록 만들겁니다. 우리가 제대로 된 교육을 받고 나면 우리는 우리가 원하는 무엇이든 될 수 있는 파워를 가지게 될 것입니다. 그리고 우리는 그러한 파워를 선한 목적으로, 경작의 목적으로, 그리고 지혜를 위해서만 사용할 것입니다. 우리는 액면그대로 받아들이지 않을 것입니다. 우리는 질문을 던지고 진실을 요구할 것입니다.

So, here I stand. I am not standing here as valedictorian by myself. I was molded by my environment, by all of my peers who are sitting here watching me. I couldn't have accomplished this without all of you. It was all of you who truly made me the person I am today. It was all of you who were my competition, yet my backbone. In that way, we are all valedictorians.

그러므로 나는 이 곳에 섰습니다. 나 혼자의 힘으로 이 수석 졸업자 자리에 선 것이 아닙니다. 나는 환경에 의해 만들어졌고 나와 함께 앉아 지켜봐 준 모든 학우들에 의해 만들어 졌습니다. 여러분이 없었다면 이 자리에 설 수 없었을 것입니다. 오늘의 나를 만든 사람들은 여러분들입니다. 나의 경쟁자였으면서 나의 분수령이 되었던 여러분 모두의 덕분이었습니다. 그래서 우린 모두가 함께 수석 졸업자들 입니다.

I am now supposed to say farewell to this institution, those who maintain it, and those who stand with me and behind me, but I hope this farewell is more of a “see you later” when we are all working together to rear a pedagogic movement. But first, let's go get those pieces of paper that tell us that we're smart enough to do so!

나는 이제 이 교육기관과 고별해야 합니다. 교사들과 행정관들, 나와 함께 섰던 사람들, 내 뒤에 있었던 사람들과 고별해야 합니다. 하지만 나는 이 고별인사가 우리 모두 힘을 합쳐 교육의 개혁을 함께 이루어 낼 일원으로서 “다시 또 보자”라는 인사가 되었으면 합니다. 하지만 먼저 우리가 그 사업을 해 낼 수 있는 능력을 갖췄다는 증명서를 받을 수 있는 곳으로 함께 떠나도록 합시다.
