A Slow Day In Texas (조용한 텍사스의 하루)

It's a slow day in a little East Texas town. The sun
   is beating down, and the streets are deserted. Times
   are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody lives on
   credit. On this particular day a rich tourist from
   back east - is driving through town.

텍사스 동쪽의 작은 마을. 무료한 하루를 보내고 있었다.

태양은 작열하고 길은 텅비어 있다. 시기가 어려워 사람들은 빚에 시달리는 삶에 빠져있다.

하루는 동부에서 온 부자 관광객 차가  마을을 지나치고 있었다.

   He stops at the motel and lays a $100 bill on the desk -
   saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to
   pick one to spend the night.

부자 관광객은 한 모텔로 들어가 백달러짜리 지폐 한장을 책상에 올려 놓는다.

일단 먼저 윗층으로 올라가 방을 둘러 본 후에 첵크인을 하겠단다.

   As soon as the man walks upstairs, the owner grabs the bill and
runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher.

관광객이 윗층으로 올라가자 마자 모텔 주인은 그 백달러짜리 지폐를 들고 이웃 정육점으로 달려가 빚을 갚았다.

   The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to
   retire his debt to the pig farmer.

지폐를 받아 든 정육점 주인은 아랫동네 돼지 목장 주인에게 달려가 빚을 갚는다.

   The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill at the
supplier of feed and fuel.

정육점 주인이 건네 준 백달러 지폐를 든 돼지 목장 주인은 사료와 연료값을 치르러 달려간다.

   The guy at the Farmer's Co-op takes the $100 and runs to
   pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been
   facing hard times and has had to offer her "services" on
   credit.

백달러짜리를 받아 든 사료집 주인은

가까운 접대부촌으로 달려가 경기가 좋지 않아 외상으로 서비스를 해 줬던 아가씨에게 외상값을 갚았다.

   The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill
   with the hotel owner.

백달러 지폐를 받은 접대부 아가씨는 곧바로 그 모텔 주인에게 달려가 그동안 밀렸던 방값을 지불했다.

   The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the
   counter so the rich traveler will not suspect anything.

모텔 주인은 그 부자 여행객이 알아채지 못하도록 그 백달러 지폐를 카운터 위에 잽싸게 올려 놓았다. .

   At that moment, the traveler comes down the stairs, picks
   up the $100 bill, states that the rooms are not
   satisfactory, pockets the money, and leaves town.

그 순간  여행객은 계단을 내려와 그 백달러짜리 지폐를 집어들면서 방이 마음에 들지 않는다고 돈을 주머니에 다시 넣으며 모텔을 나갔다.

   No one produced anything. No one earned anything.

아무도 생산해 낸 것도 없고 돈을 번 사람도 없다.

   However, the whole town is now out of debt and now looks to the
future with a lot more optimism.
   And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how the United States
   Government is conducting business today.

하지만 이제는 마을 전체가 빚을 다 갚게 되었고

마을 사람들은 희망 찬 미래를 바라 볼 수 있게 되었다.
